You press the accelerator, and the engine pauses before it answers. Or the starter spins the engine just fine, but it takes a few tries to actually get it running. Could the fuel system be falling behind? Fuel has to arrive in the right amount, at the right pressure, at the right time. A problem anywhere along the way can change how the car starts or accelerates. These five fuel-system faults are possible causes, though ignition, airflow, and other systems can produce similar symptoms. 1. A Weak Fuel Pump Can Cause Engine Hesitation The fuel pump sends fuel from the tank toward the engine. A pump can deliver enough fuel at idle but struggle when acceleration increases demand, causing hesitation, power loss, or stalling under load. Other pump faults can make starting difficult or keep the engine from running at all. Hearing the pump hum doesn't prove its pressure and delivery are good enough. And silence doesn't prove the pump itself has failed, since it may ... read more
